You are doing it wrong.
I know you have good intentions.
Still, you are going about it all wrong.
People proudly advertise these “equal signs” because they are under the delusion that they stand for marriage equality. They arrive at the conclusion that legalizing marriage for same sex couples represents “marriage equality” because they are not considering what other forms of marriage might exist for consenting adults in pursuit of their own happiness. The obvious example is that of plural marriage. If three adults willfully desire to enter into marriage, then they will quickly learn that “marriage equality” does not apply to them. Indeed, the term “marriage equality” is a misnomer. There is nothing equal about it. Instead, “marriage equality” is merely a word play for the moral preferences of an emerging generation.
For so long the gay community has suffered under moral majority laws that treat them like second class citizens without the same legal protections as straight married couples. The gay community, more than anyone else, knows the pain and indignity of this. By pushing for this narrowly defined “marriage equality”, are we not turning a blind eye to the moral majority legal oppression upon plural relationships that we so desperately want to save gay couples from? It does not matter what your opinion might be of plural marriage. It only matters that we treat everyone fairly.
To be clear, I think it is a good thing that laws are changed to be more inclusive & more equal – marriage included. However, people are failing to see that marriage laws are inherently discriminatory. The remedy is not more inclusive legislation. The remedy is to get the government out of the business of marriage altogether. We should abolish all marriage laws and let free people associate in any way that they wish.
Are we not capable of organizing ourselves? Churches and their congregations can define and ordain marriages any way they choose. Civic and social organizations can define and validate marriages in any way they choose. Why should we seek bureaucrat permission regarding who we associate with? Freedom is beautiful. Use it.
Abolish marriage laws. This, my friends, is what marriage equality looks like. Now get that bumper sticker off your Prius!
BTW: I like how you juxtapose Obama stickers with peace stickers. Humor and irony are great weapons to wake up the masses.
