Are the rights that Americans enjoy at home portable when we travel to other countries? When we voluntarily enter a foreign nation, are we obligated to play by their rules? And when we voluntarily enter a foreign nation as dangerous as Syria, Iraq, or Libya are we solely responsible for the risks that we are undertaking? Does America bear the moral, financial, and military burden for the safety of all US citizens no matter where on Earth they may stand?
Is a US military retaliation the proper response to the beheadings by ISIS? Does it matter that the ISIS killings were barbaric? Would you be less outraged if ISIS used a humane dose of lethal injection? Does it matter that the American victims had intentions that are aligned with our own beliefs? If these American victims supported a violent brand of Islam, would we still retaliate against ISIS? Do we have foreign policy principles? What if our government only advocates military force when it conveniently fits an insidious narrative?
Are the American people morally responsible to kill somebody that kills one of our own on foreign soil? Do terrorists have a similar moral obligation to kill an American after we kill one of their own? Do the families of collateral damage victims have a moral obligation to kill an American for killing one of their own? Is revenge killing moral? Will the killing ever stop? Does all this killing make us more safe in America?
What if our government has spent decades in the Middle East on a nonsensical pattern of arming rebel groups only to soon thereafter declare those rebel groups to be terrorist threats to the US? What if America armed ISIS to topple Syria but then realized that ISIS is worse than Assad’s Syrian regime? What if America is to blame for ISIS’ rise to power? What if this makes America partly accountable for the ISIS beheadings? What if reading this makes you mad at me instead of mad at us?
(this video has been censured off you tube so many times. I hope this link still works when you try it…)
What if the attacks of 9/11 were retaliation for decades of US meddling in the sovereign affairs of the Middle East? What if all the violence in the Middle East since 9/11 is actually a sequence of retaliations that started 60 years ago? What if Americans listened to our enemies instead of trying to outkill them?
What if the best thing we could do is to stop interfering in the Middle East?
