Fred Phelps, founder of the wretched Westboro Baptist Church in Kansas, has died. My first reaction was happy indifference… “Good. The world is a better place without that horrible man”.
After a moment, I even happily entertained sinister thoughts of thousands of people showing up at his funeral to celebrate, dance, and verbally attack his mourning family…. just as they did to so many grieving Americans. That will teach them a lesson for sure.
What lesson does it teach?
Hate begets hate. Our hate in return for their hate only deepens our divide and reduces our chance to reconcile differences.
Love conquers hate. I can’t believe I just wrote that. I just vomited in my mouth. And yet, it is true. My mom would be proud.
Show some love
I mailed the letter below to Fred Phelps’ family. I ask everyone to offer their love and sincere condolences to the mourning members of Fred Phelps’s family and community. If we want revenge, then we protest his funeral. If we want change, then we show some love with a positive example. Our message is so much more powerful when wrapped in our positive example. We could attack them while they are hurting. Instead we choose to lift them up.
My card won’t mean much. But thousands of cards is a powerful message. Please join me. Write your card. Tell them that you disapprove of their funeral protests. Follow it with your sincere condolences.
Be the change you want to see.
